Latvian U-20 hockey team loses to Finland in the first game of the world championship / Article

Klāvs Weinbergs scored the only goal for the majority of the Latvian national team at the beginning of the last third, when the Finns had already secured a four-goal lead. Goalkeeper Bruno Brūveri, who saved 33 of 39 shots, was named the best in the Latvian team.

Two pucks by Joakim Kemmel gave Finland a 2-0 lead in the first period, but in the second period Brad Lambert and Roni Hirvonen each realized the numerical advantage and achieved a four-goal advantage. In the last third, until the final whistle, the Finnish advantage was strengthened by two more goals from Ātu Rati and Kaspers Poutio.

Lövi Merilainens caught 19 out of 20 Latvian players’ shots in the Finnish goal.

In the second game in Group A, represented by Latvia, the Czech ice hockey players were superior to the Slovaks with 5:4.

In the World Championship, in the group stage, Latvian hockey players’ next opponents in the group will be Canadian peers on Wednesday in Edmonton, they will play Slovakia on August 12, and the Czech Republic on August 14. Latvia is participating in the tournament because the International Ice Hockey Federation disqualified the national teams of Russia and Belarus from all tournaments. At the end of the tournament, no team will be eliminated from the elite.
