Akmens won the semi-final race with a time of 37.06 seconds and was ahead of his nearest rival, German Jonas Dreger, by 0.37 seconds. In the semi-final race, the fastest three qualified for the A final, while the next four finishers went to the B final.
In the final on Sunday, the best three participants of the two semi-finals, as well as the three kayakers who won their heats and were exempted from participating in the semi-final, will compete.
Canoeist Roberts Lagzdiņš finished seventh in the 500-meter semi-final race and will compete in the B final on Saturday, where he will be able to fight for 10th place overall.
In the 500 meters semi-final race in the Smailiš doubles, the Latvian crew Aleksejs Rumyancevs/Aldis Artūrs Vilde crossed the finish line fourth and remained the first over the line in the battle for the A final, however, earning the opportunity to start in the B final on Sunday.
Later on Friday, Lagzdiņš finished penultimate in 8th place in the semi-final race of 1000 meters, which was not enough to enter the B final.
The World Championship will end in Halifax on Sunday, August 7.
