Indonesian National Team Wins AFF U-16 Cup, Menpora-Ketum PSSI Joins in Lifting Trophy

The U-16 Indonesian National Team won the 2022 AFF U-16 Cup. There was a moment when the Menpora and PSSI General Chairmen stepped in to lift the trophy.

Indonesia embraced success in the 2022 AFF U-16 Cup event, which was held at home. Garuda Asia beat Vietnam in the final.

Competing at the Maguwoharjo Stadium, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Friday (12/8/2022), the U-16 Indonesian national team performed well against Vietnam. The 1-0 victory was won by Muhammad Kafiatur Rizky’s single goal at the end of the first half.

The score could not be caught by Vietnam until the end of the match. A 1-0 victory ensured Indonesia won the 2022 AFF U-16 Cup.

In the procession of lifting the trophy, there was an unusual sight. Because, it is not only members of the U-16 Indonesian National Team who hold the trophy.

On the podium, the Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali and the General Chairperson of PSSI, Mochamad Iriawan alias Iwan Bule, also stood on the stage. Both are in the middle, while the U-16 national team captain, Iqbal Gwijangge, is on the edge.

Together the three then lifted the championship trophy. While the rest of the squad is at the bottom of the podium, where usually all the players are on top.

Throughout the U-16 AFF Cup, the U-16 Indonesian National Team performed well. The squad led by the Milky Way are unbeaten since the group stage.

Indonesia can win over the Philippines with a score of 2-0, beat Singapore 9-0, and beat Vietnam 2-1 in Group A.

In the semifinals, Indonesia overcame Myanmar’s resistance on penalties 5-4, after a 1-1 draw in normal time. In the final, Indonesia again won over Vietnam, to become the champion.

For Indonesia, this is the second title in the AFF U-16 Cup, after the 2018 edition also came out as a champion. Indonesia is now only lost to Thailand and Vietnam, who hold three titles.
