Haddad Maia: “I play my best tennis when I have no expectations”

On the grass tour he already showed that he was reaching his best level of tennis with two titles as a prize. Now, just started the hard court tour, Beatriz Haddad Maia appears at the end of WTA 1000 de Toronto in which he will face Simona Halep. After falling in her first match in San José, the Brazilian arrived in Canada to leave out Leylah Fernández, Iga Swiatek or Karolina Pliskova. Beatriz speaks to the media about her feelings after beating the Czech, as well as what it means for her to reach this final.

Triumph over Pliskova

“I am happy, it is a special moment. I’ve had a pretty tough draw, I’ve played very difficult moments. Especially in situations where I was down and not playing well, I stayed strong mentally. I think that’s why I have the opportunity to face Simona in the final. For me, it is very special. We have Maria Esther Well, Guga. I don’t compare myself to them, they are phenomenal.

It is very important and a pleasure for me not only to be Brazilian, but also a South American woman. We have many men, Argentines and Brazilians, also playing big tournaments. It is very special for me to represent girl power at this stage of the tournament, I am very proud of myself and my team.”

Important jump in the ranking: towards the Top 20

“A lot of good things have been happening to me in the last few weeks. Results come through hard work. The only thing I changed in the last 12 months was to focus more on the process, not the results. Of course, we set ourselves goals, and the next one is to be in the Top 20. I’m very happy because in tennis you never know when it’s going to happen. I always try to give 110% of myself.

My expectations in Toronto were the same as in tournaments on grass. I play my best tennis when I don’t have many. I gain confidence in each round, I believe more and more in myself, that’s why I’m in the final”.

Simona Halep, her rival in the final

“Simona is one of the most competitive players on the circuit. She is a champion, work very hard. It will be a tough battle, but I will enjoy it. I will give it my all on the track. I will try to play aggressive, play point to point”.
