Sloane Stephens (51)

An early exit for our compatriot Greet Minnen (WTA 110) at the US Open. Against Sloane Stephens (WTA 51), the ex-winner of 2017, our compatriot started very strong. But the American had a real comeback in store.

A match with two faces.

Greet Minnen was presented with a tough first assignment at the US Open today. With Sloane Stephens (WTA 51), our compatriot collided with the ex-winner of 2017.

Yet our compatriot shot fearlessly from the starting blocks. In the first set, Minnen dominated the American. She wrote the opener with resounding 6-1 numbers on her naan.

She also started the second set strong with a 3-0 lead. Well started, half done?

No, Stephens found her rhythm again and afterwards blew our compatriot with a strong serve game. The American won the other games of the second set. And also in the 3rd set, the ex-US Open winner turned out to be a size too strong for our compatriot. The first of three match points was immediately hit (set: 6-3).

Stephens will face the world’s number 1 Iga Swiatek in the next round.

“I felt the match turn”

Greetings Minnen: “I felt the match turn in the second set. Stephens has a lot of experience and did not panic when she threatened to lose the match. On the contrary, she remained very calm and systematically boosted her game and confidence.”

“I can’t blame myself much either. I’m sorry I couldn’t continue the level of my first set. I often have trouble maintaining a constant level during a match. We will have to evaluate this carefully.”
