The Belgian Grand Prix weekend was characterized by the many engine penalties. Many drivers received a grid penalty after exceeding the limit on multiple engine elements. It caused some confusion when drawing up the starting grid, because the rules in the field of grid penalties are quite complicated.
Many drivers in Belgium received a grid penalty for changing too many engine parts. Valtteri Bottas, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon, Lando Norris, Guanyu Zhou, Mick Schumacher and Yuki Tsunoda were all penalized. Bottas was given a hefty grid penalty but as he was not directed to the back of the grid he was allowed to start ahead of the other drivers. Tsunoda had to start from the pits because he changed his bike under parc fermé rules.
Former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock no longer saw the wood for the trees. The German is therefore calling on the FIA to revise the rules. Speaking to the German branch of Sky Sports, Glock was quite clear: “You really need to rethink the rules to make sure they are easy to understand. Then you don’t have to think for three hours about who is where with which penalty. must also think of the fans. This was just a big drama.”
