Gauff meets Badosa and Rogers surprises Sakkari

The American Coco Gauff, number 11 in the world, won this Thursday by a double 6-4 to the Japanese Naomi Osakawinner of four Grand Slam titles, and will be the rival of the Spanish Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in San José (California, USA).

Gauff, 18, needed an hour and 29 minutes to beat an Osaka who canceled seven match points and came back from 1-5 adverse in the second set until 4-5, before succumbing.

The young American tied the balance at 2-2 in the clashes with Osaka, against whom he had won at the 2020 Australian Open and lost twice, at the 2019 US Open and 2019 Cincinnati.

Gauff will face Badosa, second favorite, in the quarterfinalsin which it will be the third crossing between the two.

Badosa beat him at the 2021 Indian Wells tournamentwhen she was champion, while Gauff triumphed this year in Indian Wells.

The Spanish premiered this Wednesday with and worked victory in the third set against the American Elizabeth Mandlik.

The big surprise of the day was given by the American Shelby Rogers, who eliminated the Greek María Sakkarinumber 3 in the world and first favorite, by winning 6-1 and 6-3.

Rogers, number 45, had eliminated Canadian Bianca Andreescu in the previous round and will face each other in the quarterfinals with the American Amanda Anisimova.

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka had to suffer, number 6 in the world, who needed two hours and 36 minutes to beat American Caroline Dolehide, number 168, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.

Her rival in the quarterfinals will be the Russian Daria Kasatkina7th favourite.

In the other meeting of the day, the Russian Veronika Kudermetova won 6-2 and 7-5 against the American Claire Liu and met the Tunisian Ons Jabeurthird favorite, in the rooms.
