From a quadruple bogey on hole 1… to victory!

The Wyndahm Champioship, the tournament of unfinished homework on the PGA Tour that leads to the Fedex Cup playoffs, the September exam in August, removed the history books of the American Tour. In one of those sections at the bottom of the page at the end of unsuspected records will appear the name of the Korean Joohyung Kim, brilliant winner of the Greensboro tournament by five shots ahead.

It was not, however, the gap with the second anthology. Neither did the 20 under par he scored at the end thanks to a final round of 61 shots that dislodged his compatriot Sumghjae Im from the head. What was great was that Kim did it after playing the first hole of the tournament on Thursday with a quadruple bogey, without falling into the water and hitting the last six of them in less than 100 meters. As far as the PGA Tour database goes, no one had ever won a tournament with such a catastrophe.

From there, everything was positive for the young Asian. He was able to close the first day with 67 shots, after seven birdies, four in the last five holes of the day, and on Friday he repeated as many successes, only slowed down by a bogey. A 68 on Saturday, at a par 70, gave way to the last round in which he was able to play the first nine holes in 27 shots (eight under par), with six birdies and an eagle. Then came another bogey and two more birdies.

Rose to Spieth’s mark

Kim also becomes, at 20 years, one month and 17 days the second youngest golfer to win a tournament on the American Tour after World War II (after Jordan Spieth who won the 2013 John Deere Classic at 19 years and 11 months) and the first golfer to win on the PGA Tour between those born in the 21st century.

He is the third Korean player to win this course in the most important circuit in the world after Im and Kyoung-Hoong Lee. Historically burdened by compulsory military service in their country, which hinders their advancement, Koreans begin to imitate their female compatriots. At the moment, Lee is in twenty-first place in the world ranking immediately behind Im.
