Fernando Tatis Jr. on suspension: “I am completely devastated”

The MLB Players Association issued a statement on behalf of the Dominican shortstop suspended for prohibited substances

The Major League Baseball Players Association y Fernando Tatis Jr. issued a joint statement in which the San Diego Padres player declared having used a prohibited substance without knowing that it violated the league’s anti-doping policy, for which he was suspended 80 games without salary.

“Major League Baseball has informed me that a test that was performed on me returned a positive result for Clostebol, a prohibited substance. It turns out that I unknowingly used a medication to treat ringworm (a fungal skin infection) that contained Clostebol. I should have used the resources at my disposal to ensure that no prohibited substance was in what I used. I failed to do that.”

Clostebol is an anabolic steroid, a drug that belongs to the group of so-called corticosteroids or corticosteroids. It is used for skin conditions, to help in the healing of wounds and burns.

“I want to apologize to Peter, AJ, the entire Padres organization, my teammates, Major League Baseball and fans everywhere for my mistake. I have no excuse for my mistake, and I would never do anything to cheat or disrespect this game that I love.”

“I have taken countless drug tests throughout my career, including on March 29, 2022, all of which have come back negative until this test.”

Tatis Jr. was in the midst of a minor league rehab assignment after missing the first four months of the season with a broken left wrist.

“I am completely devastated. There is no other place in the world I would rather be than on the pitch competing with my teammates.”

“After initially appealing the suspension, I have realized that my mistake was the cause of this result, and for that reason I have decided to begin serving my suspension immediately. I look forward to meeting my teammates on the field again in 2023.”

Tatis Jr.’s contract remains fully guaranteed for the next twelve seasons, during which he is owed $324 million.
