European Championships: That was day 4 in Munich

Status: 08/14/2022 21:57

Elisabeth Seitz and Emma Malewski performed too well for the competition. Climber Hannah Meul flirted with gold. And track cyclist Theo Reinhardt was actually a substitute – and still took silver.

Gymnastics – rejoicing at Seitz and Malewski, tears at Bui

First Elisabeth Seitz on the uneven bars, then Emma Malewski on the balance beam – on Sunday (08/14/2022) there were two gold medals for German gymnasts – an outstanding success. At some point, the competitions were over, only the emotions did gymnastics. There was surprise and joy, laughter and tears – what a day of gymnastics.

It had been emotional before, just without a medal. Kim Bui finished fifth in the uneven bars final – it was the last competition of her long and successful career.

Track bike – when the substitute takes silver

Actually, Theo Reinhardt wasn’t supposed to drive at all, he only moved up because Roger Kluge was needed in the road race. So the 31-year-old drove – and how he drove: silver in the elimination race. It shouldn’t have been the last medal, as the competitions on Sunday showed.

Triathlon – again and again Lindemann

Gold went to the French in the mixed relay, which came as no surprise. Germany took silver and that had a lot to do with anchor Laura Lindemann. She passed her competitor Julie Derron of Switzerland on the run, it was the defining moment on her way to silver.

In general, the European Championship was a successful one for the German Triathlon Union (DTU). After all, Lindemann had already won silver in the women’s triathlon.

Sport Climbing – Meuls Silver Flash

Hannah Meul even flirted with gold in the women’s bouldering final, in the end it was silver – it’s the biggest success of her career. Once, on the third boulder, Meul took the course on the first try. One flash, optimal point yield. A very powerful idea.

In the men’s lead final, Alexander Megos and Yannick Flohé dreamed of a medal for a long time – and yet they went away empty-handed. Megos finished fifth, Flohé sixth on his 23rd birthday.

Rowing – when dreams burst

The rower Oliver Zeidler missed the title at the European Championships 2022 in fourth place. And so was probably the cheesiest story this EM one that was not written. 50 years ago, Zeidler’s grandfather won Olympic gold in Munich. Zeidler, he’s said that a lot lately, wanted to emulate him. Only he didn’t succeed.

It was the bitter end of an already weak EM performance by the rowers.

The German mixed four won a medal in para rowing. The team had only been able to train together once due to illness-related absences. “In rowing, they always say that it takes a lot of kilometers as a team to function well together”said batsman Marc Lembeck. That’s how it went.

Road cycling – no medals, fall of Ackermann

For the German road cyclists it was not enough for a medal at the European Championships. Pascal Ackermann crashed almost 40 kilometers from the finish. Fabio Jakobsen from the Netherlands secured the title.

Table tennis – twice mixed, twice off

Two German mixed teams competed on Sunday, both survived the first round and then dropped out in the round of 16. Things went better in the women’s individual competition.

The German men still had a break. Timo Boll, Benedikt Duda, Dang Qiu, Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Patrick Franziska are seeded for the round of the top 64 players, they only serve on Wednesday.
