Broadcast of the European Championship final breaks an eleven-year TV record

The German soccer players have missed the European title. At the famous Wembley Stadium in London, the English team won 2-1 after extra time. One of the most important players on the pitch is missing.

The final of the women’s European Championship gave ARD a record rating. 17.897 million viewers saw the bitter defeat of the DFB women on average. The German games provided strong numbers throughout the tournament.

Dhe live broadcast of the final of the German soccer team at the European Championships in London broke the eleven-year-old audience record from the 2011 World Cup. An average of 17.897 million people watched the 1-2 defeat of the DFB selection against England after extra time on ARD on Sunday. According to AGF video research, the market share of the approximately two-hour transmission was 64.8 percent.

Never before have so many people in Germany watched a women’s soccer game on television. The previous best value was set at the home World Cup: 16.95 million people watched the quarter-final game Germany against Japan (0:1), the market share at the time was 59.3 percent.

In Great Britain, according to the BBC, the final had a peak of 17.4 million TV viewers. In addition, another 5.9 million experienced the Lionesses’ first European Championship success via stream. This does not include spectators at fan festivals and in pubs.

The tournament in England gave ARD and ZDF strong figures overall, which then rose steadily with the German successes. The previous EM record was set in the semifinals against France with an average of 12.187 million people and a market share of 47.2 percent. An average of 6.58 million watched the three games of the DFB selection in the preliminary round.

Even games without German participation met with great interest. An average of 5.392 million people watched the English national team’s 4-0 victory in the semifinals against Sweden on Tuesday evening on ARD. According to the broadcaster, this resulted in a market share of 23.6 percent.

The most successful transmission without German participation up to that point was the quarter-finals between England and Spain on ZDF with 4.812 million viewers.

“Great respect for Ms. Popp,” says ex-soccer player Jimmy Hartwig. He doesn’t know if some male internationals would have done that. Regarding the wrong decision in favor of the English, he says there was fraud involved.
