Eintracht Frankfurt under pressure after Supercup defeat

Frankfurt’s “daily bread” is the Bundesliga. “We can’t let them out of our sights,” warned goalkeeper Kevin Trapp in mid-July on the final day of the training camp in Austria, after answering numerous questions about the Champions League. After the defeats of Eintracht against Bayern Munich (1:6) at the start of the Bundesliga and against Real Madrid (0:2) in the Supercup, everyday life in the first division with three compulsory tasks awaits the Europa League winner, who was grounded early in the competition.

The tasks of unity

And already the highly valued team is under pressure to avert a false start in its core business that would cause unexpected unrest. In the games against Hertha BSC (Saturday, 3.30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on Sky), Cologne and Bremen, the Hessians, who want to be among the top six clubs after the 34th matchday, have to prove that they are right set high goals. That they learned from the crash landing against Bayern.

If the Eintracht professionals in Berlin were disciplined and everyone did their job, it would be a first step in the right direction. The players have to act more consistently in attack and defense than in the duels with Madrid and Munich. The offensive personnel must make better use of the chances to score and the defense must not afford any individual dropouts. Only then will Eintracht be able to return to the road to success and live up to its aspirations under its own steam.

Frankfurt’s appearance in Berlin will also show how the Champions League participants can deal with Filip Kostic’s departure to Juventus Turin. The great weakness of the team, which has lost its target player on the left flank, is undisputed. The Serbian international scored 33 goals and 66 assists in 172 competitive games in his four years in Frankfurt. With his power and dynamism, the Serb had a special position in attack.
