How Götze got back in top form
„Go all the way!“
That’s the motto (in German: pull it through to the end) from Mario Götze (30) on WhatsApp. His impressive Eintracht premiere shows: That’s not just a saying.
Götze has big things in mind again! He says: “We want to play as high up as possible and go far in all competitions.”
At the 4-0 in Magdeburg at the start of the cup, the world champion was the boss. And on Friday his ex-club Bayern is coming to Frankfurt for the start of the league!
Coach Oliver Glasner: “I said to him: ‘Don’t let me tell you nonsense, you see the rooms much better than I do. Bring your creativity.’”
As pacesetter and leader, who describes himself as the “piece of the puzzle in the system”, he was almost everywhere.
Sometimes he clears in his own penalty area, sometimes he disrupts the Magdeburg defense in front of their goal. But above all, Götze shines with many clever, surprising passes (78 percent pass rate) and was involved in the first three goals.
Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (32): “Mario plays incredibly intelligently. I’ve already seen in training how he moves into the rooms. We know that he can play good passes.”
Surprising: In the tests, Götze was never on the pitch for more than 45 minutes and was carefully built up. In Magdeburg, he not only lasted 79 minutes, he ran 11 kilometers – the best time up to that point.
Götze is incredibly wiry and fit. He does yoga (at least once a week for 3.5 hours). And: Before the season he got fit with Taekwondo.
Will he be a candidate for the national team again? He is on the list for Hansi Flick (57).
SPORT BILD reveals that the national coach had him observed during his time in Eindhoven (2020 to 2022). And Flick will also be in the stadium on Friday.
