Hugs for German riders, shaking hands with the 78-year-old Princess Benedikte – and all this despite the Covid infection. At the World Cup, the behavior of the British team causes irritation.

IIn retrospect, the pictures, which just seemed so harmless, are alarming: the dressage teams’ award ceremony at the World Championships on Sunday evening in Herning, twelve athletes on the podium, all happy about their medals. On the far left in silver: Britain’s Gareth Hughes. Oddly enough, the Brits didn’t take part in the general congratulatory tumult at first.

When the third-placed German riders finally approached them, they didn’t resist congratulations or handshakes from the Danish winning quartet. Shortly thereafter, 78-year-old Princess Benedikte of Denmark, the Queen’s sister, made her rounds and shook hands with everyone. Also Hughes, who stood in front of her without a mask and did not show that he was endangering the royal old lady.
