Disappointment reigns: “We weren’t the Union we used to be” | union

It shouldn’t have been. In a swirling Ibrox, Union lost the 2-0 bonus from the first match due to unfortunate mistakes. An early elimination from the Champions League, but with his head held high to the Europa League. “Realistically we should not be disappointed, but last week’s unexpected stunt still hurts.”

Vanzeir: “We didn’t deserve it this way”

It seemed like a nice sequel to the already existing fairy tale that Union has already written. And with every minute that ticked by in the first half, faith in it grew.

Dante Vanzeir also realized: “If we rest here with 0-0, it will be a completely different game. Then they will be more nervous.”

“But then comes the penalty, which is a shame. Like the other goals we concede: clumsy and clumsy. We didn’t deserve it that way.”

It makes the defeat and elimination for the Union players even more painful.

“Realistically, the elimination should not be a big disappointment, but since we made a slightly bigger chance of the small chance last week, it is very sour.”

To qualify for the next round, Union had a plan: defend as a block and attack on the counter. Vanzeir admits that something went wrong with the latter: “We were too restless in possession of the ball. We were not the Union we used to be. Maybe we were suffering from some stress after all?”

Just out of the catacombs I had to let Ibrox take in, but once the match started I wasn’t impressed.

For Vanzeir, it was certainly not the fault of the 50,000 Rangers fans: “When I came out of the catacombs, I had to let it soak in. But once the game started, I was in my bubble and I was not impressed.”

Geraerts: “Brought too little to the ball”

Coach Karel Geraerts also saw that Union missed the opportunity to advance to the play-offs of the Champions League: “In the initial phase we were really perfect. As a coach I could be satisfied and I was also relaxed on the sidelines. “

“It is therefore a great pity that it all went wrong just before half-time. You take a very annoying goal while nothing is wrong. A lost ball blows on Van der Heyden’s arm and of course they immediately punish something like that.”

Although the Rangers certainly didn’t play great, Union couldn’t stop them enough: “We didn’t get enough of the ball. You know they’re going to press in the last half hour and then you have to do more with possession. We made wrong choices and were unable to counteract sufficiently.”

“This certainly hurts, but we should also be proud of ourselves. We were able to put our feet next to those of the Rangers. This is a far too difficult result and although we did not play well, we deserved more today. we remember. We can be really proud of this.”

It is of course not the case that Union is left empty-handed. From next month it will enter the Europa League: “There is still a lot to come. We have to take these matches with us and are a good experience for the players and for this club.”

We didn’t bring enough possession, but we can certainly be proud of this achievement.
