Bundesliga: Lothar Matthäus makes unexpected champion prediction – BUNDESLIGA

Will the title race in the Bundesliga be more open this season than it has been for a long time?

FC Bayern is going into the race as the favourite, of course. But also Borussia Dortmund with well-known newcomers like Niklas Süle (26), Nico Schlotterbeck (22) or Karim Adeyemi (20) and RB Leipzig, which recently strengthened with national player David Raum (24), will be in the coming season by many experts quite a lot.

Lothar Matthäus (61) sees it differently! He doesn’t agree with the currently quite popular opinion that there will be a two- or even three-way battle for the championship in the Bundesliga in 2022/23. “For me everything looks like FC Bayern going it alone next season,” writes the record national player in his column on “Sky”.

So are the football fans in Germany actually experiencing the next Bayern solo effort, coupled with yawning boredom?

He was left with a lasting impression of Munich’s performance in the Supercup, when Julian Nagelsmann’s team dominated the opponent in the 5-3 win against RB Leipzig, especially in the first half: “You made a statement to the competition in this game. (…) This quality cannot be achieved in Germany.”

Jamal Musiala (19) in particular excelled in the game against the cup winners. He scored the first goal himself, he set up Benjamin Pavard’s third goal in an exemplary manner and was always present, enthusiastic and simply unstoppable by his opponents. “I sat next to national coach Hansi Flick during the game,” reveals Matthäus. “We looked at each other several times: What is he doing now? The way he kept pushing the game forward was outstanding.”

According to Matthäus, winning against a direct competitor would have “raised self-confidence”. Bayern can now start the season with confidence, which begins for them on Friday with the difficult away game at Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

And in which quite a few football fans in Germany keep their fingers crossed for the outsider. So that in the end Bayern will NOT go it alone.
