MOSCOW (Reuters) – The lawyers for Britney Greiner, who was sentenced in Russia to nine years in prison for drug possession and smuggling, appealed the sentence on Friday.
Greiner was detained and charged on February 17 for possessing a cannabis cartridge containing cannabis oil while entering Russia, and was sentenced on August 4. US President Biden has called the ruling “unacceptable.”
The US government is also offering Russia the release of former Russian soldier Viktor Bout, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence in the US, in exchange for Greiner’s release.
Greiner won two gold medals at the Olympics. He played for the Russian team.
