Baseball: Ohtani’s 26th homer was behind the Angels’ victory over the Twins.

Shohei Ohtani’s 26th home run gave the Los Angeles Angels a 5-3 11-inning victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Trailing 3-0 at Angel Stadium, Ohtani hit a two-out home run in the eighth inning. Magneuris Sierra had a two-run, two-out hat-trick in the ninth inning to tie the game, but was ruled out as he tried to make a home run in the park.

The Angels won in the 11th minute on a Taylor Ward home run on reliever Emilio Pagan (3-6), after the hosts were denied a superb play by Twins center Bryan Buxton.

In the late 10th minute, Ohtani was intentionally promoted with one out and the potential game-winning run to third overall.

With the infield and no one covering second base, he tried to steal the sack, but Buxton made a game-saving catch on a low, hard hit and Ohtani was easily doubled to first base to end in the sleeve.

Ohtani, who went 1 for 4, tried to beat a bunt single in the first inning and hit easy fly outs in the third and sixth innings.

With MLB’s tiebreaker rule in effect starting in the 10th, relievers Jose Quijada and Ryan Tepera (2-2) each worked a scoreless inning to set up the Angels victory.

In Washington, Yu Darvish looked poised for his 11th win for the San Diego Padres before struggling in the sixth inning of a 4-3 loss to the Nationals.

Darvish (10-6) knocked out nine batters and took a 3-0 lead late in the sixth inning at Nationals Park before giving up two straight home runs — a two-run hit for Yadiel Hernandez and a solo for Joey Meneses, who briefly played in Japan for the Orix Buffaloes.

The Japanese right-hander left the field with no outs in the seventh inning, giving up Washington’s four runs on seven hits and a walk.

At Fenway Park, Hirokazu Sawamura struck out two players and allowed a strike in a scoreless seventh inning for the Boston Red Sox, who lost 3-2 to the New York Yankees.
