Frenkie de Jong at the heart of a crazy Barcelona soap opera.

FC Barcelona is definitely stopping at nothing to achieve its goals! Since the start of this summer transfer window, midfielder Frenkie de Jong has found himself pushed out in order to free up cash and reduce the Catalan club’s salary mass.

Faced with the Dutchman’s refusal to leave, the Blaugrana are ready to keep him, but on the condition of seeing him reduce his wages.

An incredible threat!

And to put pressure on the young 25-year-old talent, the reigning vice-champion of Spain is not afraid to use a surreal threat: according to information from The Athletic media on Monday, the Catalan club wishes to cancel the extension signed by the former Ajax Amsterdam player in October 2020, considering it totally illegal! At the time, faced with the financial problems of Bara with the crisis linked to Covid-19, De Jong had agreed to arrange his ex-leaders by postponing the payment of part of his salaries for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, namely 18 million euros, over the following 4 years.

Refusing to pay such a sum, the new Barcelona management warned, as of July 15, the Batavian of the existence of evidence of criminal actions during its renewal. Thus, legal proceedings could be launched against the former bosses of Bara, but also against De Jong and his agents to determine the person responsible for this supposed fault and to have this deal canceled to return to the terms of his former lease, which ran until June 2024.

A means above all to put pressure

Obviously, such a move would trigger lengthy proceedings and Barcelona would have to report to many bodies, including FIFPRO. With an urgent need to slim down their wage bill, the Catalans are actually looking for a quick fix and therefore mostly want to put pressure on De Jong. But is this really the right strategy to adopt? In any case, this soap opera becomes absolutely incredible…
