Badosa mates Gauff in San Jose, Jabeur eliminated

Paula Badosa, seeded N.2, qualified for the semi-finals of the hard court tournament in San Jose (California), beating 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 the American Coco Gauff (11th) finalist of the last Roland-Garros. The Spaniard (4th in the world), who won the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells last year and is looking to win a second title this season after the one gleaned in Sydney in January, will face the Russian, Daria Kasatkina (12th), who dismissed Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (6th) 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Although having conceded his serve twice in the first set, Gauff finding himself two points away from pocketing it on his serve at 5-4, Badosa was able to erase this delay each time, taking advantage in particular of three double faults of her rival on the next game. The 24-year-old Spaniard did not fail to tighten her game even more in the tie-break, during which Gauff was again betrayed by her serve, committing two more double faults. The second set was more expeditious, the American, who had been so solid and convincing the day before against Naomi Osaka, clearly accusing the blow mentally and physically.

Earlier, Veronika Kudermetova, 21st in the world, also made it to the semi-finals, taking the best 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 over Ons Jabeur (5th), finalist of the last Wimbledon. The Russian, in search of a third title on the WTA circuit, will face an American, Shelby Rogers (45th) or Amanda Anisimova (22nd) opposed in the evening.

Kudermetova, who now leads 3-0 in their confrontations, took advantage of the feverishness in the service of the Tunisian, who lost her commitment four times in the tie-break of the first set, before breaking away afterwards, to win in 1h43.
