Badminton. World Championships: contrasting draw for Thom Gicquel and Xuefei Qi – Badminton

World Championships in Tokyo (August 22 to 28)

Back in Tokyo, where she competed in the Olympic Games last summer, BC Rostrenen badminton player Xuefei Qi (30) will have to play the big entry game for the world championships (August 22 to 28). At the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the hall which hosted the Olympic table tennis events in 2021, the French champion (N.44 in the world) will face the Chinese Han Yue (N.22) for the first time. Everything but a gift for the Habs since if the 2017 junior world vice-champion has, like many of her compatriots, been hampered by covid-19, the one who has already played five finals on the World Tour (one victory) has , since then resumed its progression.

Reunion for Gicquel and Delrue

Now N.9 planetary (their best ranking), Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue are themselves exempt from the first round of the Worlds in Tokyo. They will therefore have the opportunity – and the advantage – to see their future adversaries compete.

If they justify their higher ranking, it should be the Taiwanese Yang – Hu (N.34), rather than the Scots Hall – McPherson (N.40). But if Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue are on two victories against the Asians, they have a negative record against the British (0-2), which however dates from 2018.

Seeded N.7, the Blues are placed in the low part of the table, where they could face the locals Watanabe – Higashino (N.3). But the road will be long until this possible quarter-final.
