Anthony Barbier crowned French archery champion in the countryside: “I knew how to seize my chance when necessary”

Field shooting has the particularity of taking place on various terrains. Anthony Barbier likes this discipline which goes beyond the codes of classic target shooting. On Sunday August 7, he was crowned French archery champion in the field, Elite recurve category. In the final, he beat Sam Herlicq (Mouans Sartoux). Anthony Barbier looks back on this competition over two days.

How did you experience these French championships?

In qualifying, it didn’t go too badly, but it wasn’t exceptional either. Despite everything, I knew how to pull out of the game at the right times. I didn’t necessarily shoot at a super level all along, but I was able to slip in as soon as a door opened. I knew how to seize my chance when necessary.

How did you experience the pressure of the last matches?

The final phase was a little special, because in a plain exposed to the wind. So in terms of pure performance, these are not scores that are particularly good. But we were all in the same conditions. I knew how to be a little notch above my opponent and training partner, since I train with him in Lyon! Better for me.

How do you welcome this national title, you who were vice-champion of France 2021?

It’s great, these are good times shared. And then it puts you on the right track, since there is the selection for the world championship (from October 3 to 9, editor’s note) the last weekend of August (27 and 28) : if I could win my ticket, that would be great.

Is field shooting a discipline that suits you rather well?

Yes, that’s what I said to myself: I did four French championships and I’m still in the medals: three gold and one silver. It is true that it is a discipline that I like very much.

How will the next few weeks go for you?

In three weeks, there is the selection for the campaign world championships. And then afterwards, we have the European Club Cup which is also approaching (September 17-18). And then the selection for the World Cup season next year in Olympic shooting (September 26-30). So at the end of August and the month of September, it’s quite busy. So, no rest: training!
