Biscayan Hamid Ben Daoud, one of Spain’s strengths in the European marathon that takes place on Monday in Munich, will not be at the start due to a last-minute injury. As explained by the RFEA in a statement, “Hamid Ben Daoud joined the ‘EspañaAtletismo’ concentration yesterday with some discomfort that had intensified in the last training session.” After the MRI performed on the marathon runner, the tests reflected “a bone edema in the sacrum”, so the decision has been to give up a competition where Ben Daoud had high hopes to fight for the medals.

In fact, the long-distance runner based in Zamudio had the third best mark of the participants, only surpassed by Ayad Landassem, with whom he had shared the Spanish record until the man from Lleida lowered it to 2.06.25, and the German Amanal Petros, with 27, for that 2.06.35 of Ben Daoud. During this season, his preparation had been focused on arriving at the European Championship ready to fight for everything.

In fact, his training sessions had been on the right track until the last few days, but this week Ben Daoud began to feel some discomfort when running that led him to undergo a check-up in Madrid, where the injury that prevents him from take part in the European The doctors advised him against his participation, and although at first the long-distance runner’s idea was to try it, he has finally preferred to avoid risks that, if worsened, could compromise his autumn season.

In this way, despite the “deep disappointment” at not being able to tackle a competition where Spain had two tricks to fight for victory, Ben Daoud will now focus on recovering and then look for new goals.
