Alexander Albon made his comeback in Formula 1 this season. The Thai Briton had to spend a year on the sidelines after Red Bull Racing demoted him to reserve driver. This year Albon drives for the Williams team and he certainly does that without merit. He also got a contract extension.
Albon’s step can be seen as a step down. After all, the Thai first drove for the top team of Red Bull and now fights with Williams for a connection in midfield. Albon himself obviously does not experience it that way and he is the undisputed leader at Williams. His contract extension during the summer break came as a surprise to no one.
Albon was able to respond to his new contract for the first time yesterday in Spa. That does mean that his Red Bull years are finally coming to an end. He spoke to the international media: “I am now definitively a Williams driver. Red Bull is the same for me as any other team. Of course, drivers will always be looked at when a contract expires. I have a good relationship with the Red Bull team and it even comes from a time when I was only 12 years old.”
