After rejecting the Nationals, Eric Hosmer goes to the Red SoxSeventh inning

Boston, Massachusetts /

Los Boston Red Sox swooped in to get Eric Hosmer on Tuesday when the San Diego Padres first baseman turned down a trade to the Boston Nationals as part of the blockbuster exchange of Juan Soto, the most important when the Trade Deadline of the Major League Baseball (MLB) is 2022.

The Red Sox got Hosmer, a 2016 All-Star with Kansas City, along with two minor leaguers and cash in exchange for minor league left-hander Jay Groome. The addition of the four-time Gold Glove winner, who is batting .272 with eight home runs and 40 RBIs, helps fill one of the team’s biggest voids so far this season.

As part of the trade, San Diego will send up to $43.56 million to Boston, offsetting most of the roughly $46 million remaining on the eight-year, $144 million deal, which runs through the 2025 season.

Red Sox first basemen, primarily Bobby Dalbec and Franchy Cordero, have hit .224 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs. The team also has 10 errors at first base, tied for the most in the majors, with Cordero committing three in a game last week.

Boston also hosted a pair of 22-year-olds: Max Ferguson and Corey Rosier, who have been playing in Class A this season.

Groome, 23, is 4-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 19 appearances, making 17 starts at Double-A and Triple-A this season. He is 12-22 with a 4.46 ERA in his career since he was selected 12th overall in the 2016 draft.
