Zion Williamson is reportedly on the verge of a contract extension with the New Orleans Pelicans

Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly close to an agreement on an early contract extension. A monster deal beckons the 21-year-old franchise star, but details still have to be negotiated.

This is from a report by Shams Charania (The Athletic) out. Accordingly, Williamson and the Pelicans are likely to agree on a Rookie Max extension that could bring the Big Man up to $ 231 million over five years.

However, the contract will apparently include several clauses intended to protect the Pelicans from any injury-related failures of the youngster. According to Shams, the details are still being negotiated.

Williamson was the first pick of the 2019 draft by New Orleans, but injury woes mean he’s only played 85 games in three years. The Pelicans star missed the past season completely due to a foot fracture in the offseason and several setbacks.

In the previous season he made it into the All-Star Team for the first time and impressed with 27 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists on average with a 61.1 percent field shot rate. The Pelicans are hoping to launch another playoff assault next year with a fit Zion and the core of Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum. Even without the potential franchise star, New Orleans made it into the postseason last season and briefly annoyed the favorites from Phoenix in round (2-4).
