Dirk Nowitzki was in the best of moods. The long-departed German basketball star sat in a hall in Stockholm and watched the World Cup qualifier between Sweden and Slovenia from the front row.
Nowitzki, now 44, insisted on smirking at his Dallas Mavericks successor, Luka Doncic. When Doncic, without a doubt the most important player for the Texans, went to the free-throw line, the Swedish fans chanted: “Overrated”. Nowitzki made fun of it and agreed.
Born in Würzburg, he played exclusively for the Mavericks during his career, and he spent the last year of his career together with Doncic. Nowitzki’s wife Jessica is Swedish, but the family lives in Texas. At the home European Championship in Germany (September 1 to 18) Nowitzki is one of the ambassadors and should also be at the games in Cologne and Berlin.
