Ösi legend Hans Krankl (69), who shot Germany out of the World Cup in 1978 in the “Schmach von Cordoba”, threatens our European Championship team before the quarter-finals on Thursday (9 p.m., ARD live) against Austria with a “women’s Cordoba” .
He said: “Now women have a great opportunity to make history. The starting position is similar to ours in 1978. Germany is the favourite, we are outsiders. In the subconscious, the big sister will underestimate the little one again – this is our big chance.”
DFB defender Felicitas Rauch (26) counters: “Very few of us have the result from back then on screen. We all know what this is about. We will definitely never underestimate anyone. We also have to give 110 percent against Austria.”
Assistant coach Britta Carlson (44): “I know Cordoba, but not so well. Those were the men, too…”
And Joti Chatzialexiou (46), head of national teams, promises: “There will be no female Cordoba. We decide who moves into the semi-finals.”
