Wimbledon: Nick Kyrgios demands disqualification from Stefanos Tsitsipas and insults referee Damien Dumusois

Stefanos Tsitsipas was annoyed, had just conceded the break on his own serve and thus lost the second round against Nick Kyrgios 4: 6.

The 23-year-old then hit a ball with his backhand, which flew into the audience.

Memories were awakened of Novak Djokovic, who also fired a ball in the round of 16 at the US Open 2020 and hit a line judge in the neck. The consequence at that time: disqualification.

Kyrgios now also demanded this penalty for Tsitsipas, who, unlike Djokovic, did not hit anyone according to initial findings.

Kyrgios calls referees ‘stupid’

In conversation with chair umpire Damien Dumusois, however, the Australian made a mistake in his choice of tone and words.

“Are you stupid? You’re a disgrace, you change the rules as you want,” Kyrgios snapped at the referee after he refused to comply with the request.

Again and again, the 27-year-old sought a provocative dispute with Dumusois.

Corretja: “Referees must be stricter”

An impertinence, like Eurosport-Expert Àlex Corretja clarified. “The chair umpires have to be stricter,” said the 48-year-old, who was twice in the final of the French Open during his career. “Nick just uses too many swear words,” also complained Mischa Zverev, who commented on the match as a TV expert for “Sky”.

Finally, the referee came along – which, however, did not help to calm the situation. Tsistipas and his father and coach Apostolos meanwhile left the court.

Zverev: “No disqualification for me”

“It wasn’t a disqualification for me because Stefanos didn’t hit anyone. But it was always a warning because he played the ball into the crowd,” analyzed Zverev.

But Kyrgios even went a step further and warned the referee about the “a lot of shit that the tournament will get after my press conference”.

Tsitsipas shoots down Kyrgios – on purpose?

Tsitsipas was carried away by the charged atmosphere. When the score was 1: 3 in the third set, the Greek threw a ball away again. The following code violation earned him a point penalty – Kyrgios led 4-1.

While the 27-year-old became calmer as a result, it boiled in Tsitsipas. Twice it seemed as if the fifth in the world rankings had deliberately tried to shoot down his opponent during network attacks. Once he even met the Australian – and yet Kyrgios stayed cool.

Kyrgios: “Mad Match” vs “Mad Player”

In terms of sport, the number 40 in the world had the momentum on his side. Kyrgios took the lead in the set 6: 3 and turned the encounter around.

It got dramatic in the final phase. In the tie-break of the fourth set, Tsitsipas fended off a match point at 5: 6 and shortly afterwards had the chance to equalize in the sets.

Kyrgios countered with two points in a row and secured the ticket for the round of 16 after 3:17 hours.

After that, the controversial tennis star was forgiving. It was an “amazing match” against an “amazing player”. “No matter what happened on the pitch, I love him.”
