Wimbledon > Nadal: “My philosophy is that two weeks ago I was close to retirement. Today I am no longer in that state of mind”

Jostled during his first two rounds at Wimbledon, and in particular this Thursday against the modest Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, Rafael Nadal recalled a decisive notion at a press conference: knowing how to win even when playing badly. Also asked about his retirement, the Spaniard first reacted with a little joke before imagining how he might feel when that day comes.

“My philosophy is that two weeks ago I was close to retirement. Today, I am no longer in that state of mind (laughs). I was never afraid that this day would come. I am happy to have lived a very happy life outside of tennis, even though tennis has been a very important part of my life for the past 30 years. I was happy outside of that, no doubt. There are a lot of things I love to do outside of tennis, I’m not worried about that, but it’s clear that when that day comes I will experience a change. In this life, any change requires time to adapt. It is normal that we talk about the retirement of great sportsmen, because they have been at the top for a long time, especially in very popular sports that are part of people’s lives. »
