Vietnam & Thailand Play Safe, Now Both Are Knocked Out

Jakarta

Vietnam & Thailand were under intense scrutiny for their actions of playing it safe when they met in the group phase of the 2022 AFF U-19 Cup. Now both of them have been knocked out in the semifinals!

Vietnam and Thailand drew criticism, especially from Indonesian fans, after they drew 1-1 in the final match of the 2022 AFF U-19 group stage. Both teams were considered to have played unsportsmanlike and there was suspicion of flirting, to secure qualification.

Because with the 1-1 result, Vietnam and Thailand were able to qualify while Indonesia had to be eliminated. Despite having 11 points, the same as Vietnam and Thailand, Indonesia lost head-to-head in the mini standings between the three teams after only drawing 0-0 with their opponents.

Suspicions of flirting emerged after Vietnam equalized in the last 15 minutes. After that the players just passed and played the ball at the back, without showing any determination to win.

The actions of the two countries were also highlighted by the coach of the U-19 Indonesia National Team, Shin Tae-yong. The South Korean coach questioned whether the two teams played for real fairplay.

Well, after the accusation of playing it safe, Vietnam and Thailand were both eliminated in the semifinals! Vietnam brushed Malaysia 0-3 and Thailand beaten by Laos 0-2. The 2022 AFF U-19 Cup final brought together Malaysia and Laos.

These results were greeted positively by a number of Indonesian fans on social media. Some say ‘Karma Is Real’ and some say ‘The Power of Indonesian Netizen Prayer’.

Vietnam and Thailand will then face off again in the match for third place at the Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium, Friday (15/7/2022).
