Stupid victory for Kovac without Kruse

That was really hard football fare!

Wolfsburg showers in the second round of the cup. 1-0 at fourth division Carl Zeiss Jena. Niko Kovac (50) cannot have liked this compulsory game premiere as VfL coach. It was only in overtime that Omar Marmoush (23) managed to “lucky punch”.

Incidentally, Kovac had to do without his double max. Both top star Max Kruse (34/flu) and Max Arnold (28/back) had to pass. Maybe that’s why it didn’t go so smoothly…

First Dusel victory for Kovac

The performance in the first half was particularly disappointing. After hard preparation, the wolves lacked the power to fight bravely against the hosts. Jonas Wind’s (23) header after 15 minutes just past the Jena box was the best chance for a lead.

It didn’t get much better in the second half either – despite the wind crashing the bar (49th minute). “First division, no one knows why,” chanted the Jena fans after an hour. And they weren’t entirely wrong…

Four minutes later, Kovac became too colorful and responded with a double change. It paid off almost immediately. Wing dribbler Jakub Kaminski (20) failed at Jena keeper Kunz – brilliant parade!

It wasn’t until the first minute of added time that a Brekalo free-kick found Marmoush’s head. And it landed in the hosts’ box.

By the way, Arnold had to postpone his personal premiere, who traveled to Thuringia despite his injury. The midfield boss was captained by Kovac on Friday.

His predecessor and future first representative Koen Casteels (30) took over for him against Carl Zeiss.

Wolfsburg: Casteels – Baku, Lacroix (64. Guilavogui), Bornauw, van de Ven – Wimmer, Svanberg (78. Franjic) – Waldschmidt (46. Brekalo), Wind (64. Kaminski), Marmoush – L. Nmecha.
