Uwe Seeler is dead: football legend dies at the age of 85 Sports

The football world mourns.

According to BILD information, legend Uwe Seeler died at the age of 85.

The DFB honorary captain fell asleep peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Most recently, the HSV idol fell again and again.

In the legendary final at Wembley Stadium, Seeler was runner-up at the 1966 World Cup and third at the 1970 World Cup. His big dream: one day becoming a world champion with Germany. It shouldn’t come true…

Seeler is the greatest HSV player of all time. He became German champion with Hamburg in 1960 and cup winner in 1963.

The club idol scored 404 goals in 476 games for his club from 1953 to 1972 and was top scorer in the Bundesliga in the 1963/64 season. In 1960, 1963 and 1970, Seeler was also “Footballer of the Year” in Germany. The ex-striker was HSV president from 1995 to 1998. He has been an honorary citizen of the Hanseatic city since 2003.

Uwe Seeler was also an important support for society: in 1970 he was the first athlete ever to be awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit. He has also appeared in several television films. In 2001, the legendary striker received the Golden Badge of Honor from the DFB, the highest award from the football association.

Uwe Seeler was committed to muscle atrophy aid and to the Augsburg charity soccer team “Datschiburger Kickers”, which is dedicated to raising donations for charitable purposes.

Because of his popularity, Seeler was not only called “Us Uwe” in Hamburg.

He had been married to his wife Ilka since 1959. The couple has three daughters and seven grandchildren, one of whom is Bundesliga professional Levin Öztunali (26), who plays for Union Berlin.

Until his death, Seeler lived in Norderstedt, which borders on Hamburg.
