The Tour peloton saves the Covid

The tests were carried out on Sunday afternoon, one day before the rest day in the Haute-Savoie department (western France).

Three riders have already been forced to abandon the race since the start in Denmark.

The French Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën) and the Norwegian Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE), a teammate in the Slovenian yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar, left on Saturday before the start of the eighth stage. The French Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) imitated them the next day in the morning.

“All the riders participating in the Tour de France were tested on the afternoon of July 10. All the tests were negative,” the UCI made official on Monday.

But, as the international federation insisted, “the rules implemented two years ago in the interest of the health and safety of all remain in force. It is especially about the obligation to wear a mask, to maintain a sufficient physical distance, and to frequently disinfect your hands.

In addition to the riders, the members of the technical teams of the 22 teams must undergo a test on the occasion of the rest day.

The new wave of covid, which particularly shakes France, has already caused casualties in the coaching staff and among the staff of several teams. The Quick-Step line-up has been forced to call in three different sporting directors since the start of the Tour.

Before the departure from Copenhagen, half a dozen riders were replaced within their respective teams.
