The XVI Muslim-Christian Days began on Thursday in Zalamea la Real with remarkable success, registering a massive influx of people who did not want to miss the start of this traditional event after two years without being held as a consequence of the coronavirus health crisis.

“People really wanted to enjoy the days”, they have stated from the Cistus Jara Association, which is in charge of organizing the event with the collaboration of the Municipal Council. “There were a lot of people, more than usual on the first day when, being Thursday, we have fewer visitors”, declared one of the directors of the entity, Juan Carlos Domínguez.

The many people who took to the streets during the first hot day of this celebration, which will continue until Saturday, July 16they were able to enjoy up to 15 activities in the Paseo Redondo and in Casa Cilla, where the market and the camp are located.

A fencing exhibition, a medieval combat, street performances, gypsies and pipers, an archery tournament, shooting with hand cannons, falconry or a musical entertainment were some of the attractions on Thursday afternoon and evening, which started with the welcoming ceremony for King Alfonso X El Sabio and Queen Violante, who this year are represented by Javier Agudo and Claudia Domínguez.

And all this added to the attractions of the market, which has a wide variety of food and drink products, such as a cheese shop, beers, ice creams and homemade cakes, as well as medieval toys made of wood, natural cosmetic products and, above all, a wide variety of leather craft items.

The XVI Muslim-Christian Days will continue this Friday with almost twenty activities, among which two concerts of folk music and Celtic music stand outby Albaluna and Acibeira, respectively, to which must be added a combat exhibition, black dances, animation and street theater, musical animation, a raptor exhibition, an archery exhibition and shooting with hand or an exhibition of birds and mustelids, among others.

The days have an extensive program made up of up to 50 activities and that exceeds, if possible, that of previous years. As the secretary of Cistus Jara, Antonio Domínguez, indicated during the presentation of the event, after two years of hiatus due to the pandemic, “we have made a fairly large effort. We wanted them to shine this year and we have achieved it”, for which “we have promoted concerts and street entertainment”, he added.
