The Lionesses lost to the Netherlands in the final of the Hockey World Cup

The Argentine women’s field hockey team, known as Las Leonas, fell to the Netherlands today in the World Cup final played in Terrassa, Spain, and closed the contest with the runner-up position.

After an intense and even first quarter, in which even Argentina had the clearest situations, the difference came in the second: at 2 minutes, Maria Verschoor took advantage of a rebound and opened the scoring for the Dutch, who stretched the advantage to the 7 of the hand of Frédérique Matla.

Already in the third and with the dominance of the most accentuated rival, Las Leonas suffered the third goal converted by Felice Albers at 6 minutes after a formidable collective play, so it was not enough with Agustina Gorzelany’s discount at the beginning of the last fourth to avoid defeat and climb to the top of the podium.

In this way, the albiceleste team led by Fernando Ferrara could not lift the World Cup for the third time in its history, after doing it in Perth (Australia) in 2002 and in Rosario in 2010 -on both occasions by winning the final precisely against Netherlands-.

The Lionesses had just eliminated Germany in the semis by 4-2 in the definition after drawing 2-2 in regulation time, while in the quarterfinals they had done the same against England by 1-0. In the group stage, where they finished first and undefeated, defeating South Korea 4-0, Spain 4-1 and Canada 7-1.

The history with the Netherlands, which had also prevailed in the decisive duel of the Tokyo Olympics by 3 to 1, was left with 27 falls, six equalities and 15 victories for Argentina in 48 duels between both selected.
