The 10 tennis players who will seek to redeem themselves on the American tour

The easy thing is to arrive, the difficult thing to stay. There are many players who demonstrate a high level, but really few achieve the necessary consistency on the circuit. Others, already established at the top of the ranking, can take even a step forward in terms of titles and sensations, without looking so much at the number they occupy in the ranking. Now, with the American tour ahead, some have had some time to prepare their summer plan. These are the players who can use these tournaments to change their direction for the season.

The one who will become number five in the world tomorrow, advanced by Carlos Alcaraz, has not been signing a bad year. Two titles, the Montecarlo Masters 1000 among them, and two other finals confirm this. However, the Greek has the level to raise the level of demand. Stefanos will return to the circuit at the Canadian Masters 1000, a tournament in which he will fight to defend the semifinals that he did in the last edition. His play on the surface in previous years suggests that perhaps now is the time for Tsitsipas to hit the table by winning some important tour trophy, something that seems to cost him in recent months. His loss to Holger Rune at Roland Garros shocked the tennis world, as did his loss to Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon, where we saw a totally unfocused Stefanos.

His good start to the season, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, could anticipate a possible good season for the Canadian, but it has not been like that. After breaking the curse and claiming his first singles title in Rotterdam, Felix fell in the first round in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo. His match against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros has been one of the best matches of his career, but Auger-Aliassime seems not to find the key yet to be regular in the competition. The hard court surface can help the Canadian to reconnect with his best level.

It has not been the best year for Denis. Despite the fact that at Wimbledon he cut the bad streak of six consecutive losses, Shapovalov has not finished starting in this 2022. The Canadian Masters 1000, which he plays as a local tennis player, can serve as a turning point in what has been a bad season. The only glimpse of him we could see precisely on hard court at the Australian Open, where he fell in the fifth set against Rafael Nadal in the duel that faced them in the quarterfinals.

We have been waiting for months for the Austrian, former number three in the world, to return to show that level with which he achieved great things before the injury. The last title in his record was the US Open that he won against Alexander Zverev. The Austrian, who continues to add games in that recovery, has had games to forget on the American tour, but also great results that could inspire Dominic. Although due to his good work on clay it is assumed that clay will be his best surface, cement is where he has lived the best moments of his career.

As with Tsitsipas, the Russian’s season has not been all bad. Injuries and the ban from Wimbledon have meant significant stops for Daniil, who climbed back to first place last June. This year he has lost all three finals he has played. Taking into account that last season he won in Canada and New York, the American tour could be the consolidation of Medvedev as number one in the world, closely followed by Alexander Zverev, Rafael Nadal or Carlos Alcaraz.

Despite the fact that Paula started the season with the Sydney trophy, some results have been surprising given the high level of demand towards the Spanish. Her injuries didn’t help her advance in tournaments like Roland Garros either. Badosa has been able to display a high level on several occasions, but she has not been able to maintain it to win the titles beyond the Australian. With renewed energy, Paula returns to the circuit after Wimbledon knowing that she can achieve great things on the hard court.

The number eight in the world described these bad months as “a very hard blow” in which, despite the work done, she did not find the sensations on the track. His good performances on cement in the past may help Muguruza to regain confidence in his game, although he will not have it easy. Garbiñe will debut on her American tour against Camila Giorgi, a player to whom she lost in the second round at Eastbourne last June.

The current champion of the US Open has not been signing the best of the seasons. Although she has already clarified on several occasions that she does not have to feel pressure, the viewers expect to see the spectacular level with which she won the New York tournament last year. This is also influenced by the different coaches who have been part of her team in recent months. The 19-year-old, who went from losing a Challenger final to winning the US Open, will want to meet that level of play again.

The Japanese tennis player is not exactly being constant on the circuit. With only five tournaments played in this 2022, Osaka returns to the competition in the United States. Naomi reached the final of the Miami tournament last April, where she fell to Iga Swiatek. The double finalist of the US Open is now preparing for the American tour without too many expectations, knowing her abilities on the surface.

The American player currently occupies the 53rd position in the WTA ranking. Having won the crown in New York in 2017, Sloane feels extra motivation when she plays at home. After four years without winning a trophy, Stephens won in Guadalajara last February. At 29 years old and without achieving the best results throughout this season, the American tour could be the opportunity for Stephens to return to the top.
