Jule Niemeier defeats the Ukrainian Lessia Zurenko in a dramatic match and is in the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time. There, too, the 22-year-old German should be anything but without a chance.

Jule Niemeier continued her winning streak at the classic grass lawn in Wimbledon and reached the round of 16 for the first time. The 22-year-old from Dortmund defeated the Ukrainian Lessia Zurenko 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 3 and confirmed her previous success against the third in the world rankings, Anett Kontaveit from Estonia.

For the greatest success of her tennis career, Niemeier received the equivalent of 219,000 euros. In her Wimbledon debut, Niemeier now meets Briton Heather Watson, who defeated Tamara Korpatsch in the first round. In Niemeier’s current form, getting into the quarter-finals seems realistic.

Initially, Niemeier didn’t play at all against Zureno. She started nervously and quickly found herself 3-0 down in the first set. But then she remembered her strengths and used her powerful punches again and again, and the serve got better and better. Niemeier turns the first set and fights for a 6:4.

In the second set, too, Niemeier made a false start and was quickly 0:3 behind. Although she fought back to 3:3, she lost the second round with 3:6. The decisive sentence was needed. And since the German had the better nerves. After 2:04 hours, she converted her first match point when Zurenko served and made it into the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

“It was an emotional roller coaster ride. I’m immensely proud that she managed to be there again and again in the important phases, to play actively enough,” said coach Christopher Kas. “We’re on a certain cloud, and we’ll just keep riding it and then we’ll see how far it takes us.”
