Swimmer Harvey says she was drugged at the World Cup

DCanadian swimmer Mary-Sophie Harvey says she was drugged during the World Championships in Budapest. “I was drugged on the last night of the Worlds,” Harvey wrote on Instagram. “At that point, I didn’t realize what had gotten into me. All I remember is waking up completely lost the next morning, with my trainer and doctor by my bedside.”

She celebrated and had no memory of a time window of four to six hours, wrote the 22-year-old, who won the bronze medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the World Championships on June 22nd. She heard snippets of what happened. “I can only say this: I’ve never been so ashamed.”

Swimming Association: “Concerned about her welfare”

The next day she traveled home and ate with her family. “I remember my mother saying, ‘You seem different.’ She didn’t know I felt the same way,” Harvey wrote. “I felt like the body I was in wasn’t mine (it still feels that way).”

The Tokyo 2021 Olympian posted pictures showing some injuries. Some of her friends told her they had to carry her when she lost consciousness. That probably explains injuries. But it doesn’t make her feel any better.

At the hospital, she was told “this happens more often than you think and that I was kind of lucky to get away with a sprained rib and a minor concussion.” Harvey added, “It helped me overcome some of my fears overcome, but unfortunately not all.”

Harvey wrote: “I still get scared when I think about the unknown of that night. I’m still trying to find the “lucky Mary” who found happiness before this event.”

At the request of the German Press Agency, the world association Fina said it was “aware of the worrying media reports about Mary-Sophie Harvey and is deeply concerned about her well-being”. The federation is in contact with the Canadian Swimming Federation and the local organizing committee. “In 2021, Fina has taken comprehensive measures to protect athletes and an independent investigator will be appointed to further investigate the matter.”
