Surprise at Olympique de Marseille: coach Jorge Sampaoli leaves the Marseille club

Olympique de Marseille and Jorge Sampaoli announced on Friday their joint decision to end their collaboration. The 62-year-old Argentinian coach had been at the head of OM since March 2021 and had a contract until the end of the next season.

Marseille, runner-up to Paris Saint-Germain last season, did not give the reasons for this departure, contenting themselves with thanking their technician for his involvement, his playing philosophy and his state of mind. “OM would like to sincerely and warmly thank the work of Jorge Sampaoli. After 16 months of collaboration, this work has enabled the club to take a step forward in the construction of its new sports project and to qualify directly for the Champions League.“, could we read in the press release.

According to the French sports daily L’Équipe, Sampaoli decided to leave the club because of the disappointing turn of the Marseille transfer window. Indeed, he would like seasoned players for the next season. The technician will have led OM 66 times, with a record of 36 wins, 14 losses and 16 draws.

OM, who are chasing a 10th French championship title since their coronation in 2010, finished 2nd in Ligue 1 last season, while reaching the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France and the last four of the Conference League .
