Spain beats Australia (51-62) and gets into the semifinals

Lhe U17 women’s team reached the semifinals of the World Cup being held in Debrecen (Hungary) by defeating Australia 51-62 after a very solid performance. The Spanish will have as rival in the semifinals the powerful France, who beat Germany, 63-40, looking for a place in the grand final.

Awa Fam, a 16-year-old Valencia Basket player who is 1.92 meters tall, led Spain to victory with 12 points, 17 rebounds and a PIR of 29. She was well supported by Iyana Martn (10 points and seven assists) and Judith Valero (12 points with 3/4 triples). The three are being the best of the selection during the tournament and are the mainstays of a brilliant new generation for Spanish women’s basketball.

The players led by Cristina Calero put the victory on track in a great first half in which they showed a great defense that dried up all of Australia’s scoring routes, which finished with a 1/12 from the three-point range. The 24-38 scoreline at halftime showed the superiority of the Spanish, who knew how to manage the pace and the distances in the second half.

Spain is one of the three teams that have put their men’s and women’s teams in the semifinals of the World Cup in the category.

The boys won a historic silver last weekend. France and the United States are the other teams that have achieved a double.
