Jorge Vilda’s initial plan for this European Championship has been blown up in a few weeks. The injuries of Jenni Hermoso, Salma Paralluelo and now Alexia Putellas significantly reduce the selection’s options, forced to reinvent itself a few days after its debut in the English event.

The serious injury of Alexia Putellas, the current Ballon d’Or, the beacon of the team with 100 international caps and the player for whom Spain’s entire offensive game passes is a difficult blow to assimilate. The alarms went off on Tuesday morning when in morning training the Catalan midfielder noticed some discomfort in her left knee that made her leave the session. An initial examination revealed a hypothetical sprain that left the midfielder’s participation in the tournament in the air, but seeing her walk with crutches was not at all reassuring. The tests to which she has been subjected late this afternoon confirmed the worst prognosis: rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee. There was no longer any doubt. The European Championship is past for her.

An absence of such caliber forces Spain to recalculate its route in this European Championship because we are not talking about just any casualty. The first thing is to choose the substitute for Putellas, since as it is a serious injury produced more than 24 hours after the debut in the competition, the team is able to summon another player and everything indicates that, this time, the chosen will be Amaiur Sarriegi with which, in some way, the debt that Vilda had with the Royal Society will be settled.

The Spanish Federation has not yet made the decision official, pending UEFA certifying the seriousness of the Catalan midfielder’s injury and activating the permit to replace her.
