Silver goal – Sport – SZ.de

Alexandra Ndolo risked everything in extra time, but her sword just missed her opponent Se-ra Song. Instead, the Korean scored the golden goal. At the Fencing World Championships in Cairo, Ndolo lost 10:11 in the final, but silver at the World Championships was the best result of her career.

For the German Fechter-Bund (DFeB) a long dry spell ended. Britta Heidemann won the last German women’s world championship silver medal in Kazan in 2014. After difficult years, German fencing is in a state of upheaval, most recently Leonie Ebert caused a stir with first place at the European Championships. 35-year-old Alexandra Ndolo from Leverkusen, second at the 2017 European Championships and third at the 2019 European Championships, is continuing the trend with her first World Cup medal.

In Cairo she showed herself in impressive form. In the round of 16 she had knocked out the world number one In-Jeong Choi from South Korea, in the semi-finals the two-time world champion Rossella Fiamingo from Italy. In the final, she was level with Song after nine minutes. At 10:10 it went into extra time, in which Ndolo was only slightly missing for gold.
