Sainz defends Ferrari: “We are not a disaster”

He could have finished third, but a strategic decision by Ferrari took him away from the podium after starting penultimate on the grid. Carlos Sainzangry at first, understood and then praised his team, who also had words of appreciation for the Spanish weekend.

“I think the team is doing a good job on strategy this year. Whenever there is a critical moment, we discuss things but we are not a disaster as people say. We like to talk about things, give our opinions with an open mind, ”explained the Madrid native yesterday at the Sky Sports microphones.

Sainz had just overtaken Checo Pérez in the fight for third position when Ferrari decided to stop his car and change the tyres. Decision that, at first, Sainz did not understand and that later, based on the data, he recognized that it was the right thing to do, as he explained Mattia Binotto, ultimately responsible for that strategy. “I think Carlos, from the cockpit, didn’t have all the information, so it was difficult for him to judge, but there is no doubt that we made the right decision. We realized that there was not enough life in the tires to make it to the end of the race; It’s that simple,” said the Italian.

Given these data, Sainz also agreed with his team leader. «The team decided to play it safe. We knew that position 5 and the fastest lap were good points », pointed out the Spaniard, who had one of the best weekends since he became a Ferrari driver. He fifth despite starting from the last row of the grid.
