Ramón Rovira shines in Slovakia

The Ibizan volantista Ramón Rovira is putting on a sensational performance in the European version of the Youth Olympic Festival that brings together the best athletes on the continent in the sub-17 category. The event is being held in the town of Banska Bystrica (Slovakia) and there are three Ibizans in the badminton competition. Macarena Izquierdo and Ramón Rovira as players and Vicent Martínez as coach. Badminton returned to this event after being absent since 1999 and the national team has decided to bet on the two pitiusos as their representatives.

Rovira’s role is being more than good and he has sneaked into the top 16 on the continent after finishing first in his group. In addition, it is the third seed in the face of the crosses. The round of 16 will be played this morning and if she manages to advance, she will secure the Olympic diploma and enter fully into the fight for the medals.

Rovira beat Norwegian Aleksandrs Jakolevs (21-18 and 21-14) in the group stage yesterday and on Monday, on the opening day, Turkish Bugra Aktas (23-21 and 21-19) and Croatian Roko Pipunic, third tournament seeded (21-15 and 21-15).

For its part, Macarena Izquierdo was not so lucky and was eliminated in the group stage. The Ibizan lost on the opening day against the Slovenian Anja Blazina (10-21 and 7-21) and the Swedish Sofia Strömvall (13-21 and 10-21). Yesterday, she managed to say goodbye to her with a good taste in her mouth after beating the Slovakian Lea Kyselicova (21-11 and 21-16), finishing third in her group.

Although he is already out of the individual draw, Izquierdo will enter the fray again starting tomorrow with the mixed doubles, where he will team up with his teammate Ramón Rovira. In the first round they will face Moldovans Nicolae Enachi and Paola Ginga.

Beyond sports, it is being quite an experience for these young athletes who are living everything that a Youth Olympic Games entails, with its opening ceremony, the torch and the possibility of fraternizing with athletes from other countries and other disciplines.
