The badminton finals of the 2022 Mediterranean Games held in Oran conclude with three more medals for the Spanish delegation. The gold one achieved by Pablo Abián and the two silver ones achieved by Kike Peñalver and Bea Corrales.
The fight for the men’s title faced the two Spanish volantistas. The Aragonese was looking to revalidate the title won in Tarragona 2018, while the man from Toledo was fighting to dethrone his compatriot and his doubles partner.
From the start of the match, Pablo set the pace of the match, not letting Kike show his best version and thus clearly score the first round 21-13. However, the tone of the second set was very different. Peñalver reacted to seek a tie and force the third game, but it was Pablo who finally scored this very close set 22-20 to win the gold and proclaim himself champion of the 2022 Mediterranean Games.
Bea Corrales, runner-up
In the women’s draw, Bea Corrales takes silver after losing in the final against the Turkish Neslihan Yigit by 2-0 (21-14/21-11). The Spanish player managed to qualify to play the fight for gold after putting together a great tournament and eliminating Cypriot Eleni Christodoulou in the quarterfinals and Bayrak, also from Turkey, in the semifinals.
Some Mediterranean Games in which the Madrilenian has shown a brilliant game, without giving up a single set until the final, where she has finally managed to get on the second step of the podium.
These three medals, together with the bronze won by the men’s water polo team, make a total of 15 medals for the Spanish delegation at the Mediterranean Games in Oran 2022. Two of them gold, seven silver and six bronze.
