Patrick Mouratoglou analyzes the 2022 Wimbledon final

french tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou wanted to share his analysis of the match between Novak Djokovic y Nick Kyrgios after a few days to reflect after the end of Wimbledon 2022. The Serbian conquered his 21st Grand Slam against an opponent who started with an advantage on the scoreboard. There are many aspects that come into play in a match like the one they played last Sunday. The nerves, the experience, the duration of the points, the physique of each one. These are some of the keys that Patrick Mouratoglou points out in a video on his YouTube channel, in which he explains why Novak Djokovic won the last Wimbledon final.

The change of the party goes through the rest

“A match is always more complicated than just the serve and the return, but these played an important role. Novak struggled in the first set to return serve from Kyrgios, but once he entered the match he began to read his opponent’s serve much better. Novak’s ability to return was very important, because then, the exchanges became the key to the match. If the serve had continued to have the relevance of the first set, Nick would have won. As we know, Novak is probably the best returner in the world and perhaps of all time. He positions himself where he thinks his opponent’s serve is going to go. Once the ball is in play, it’s a question of exchanges, in which Novak is superior to Nick, that’s why he ended up winning the match ”

The physical

“Another key was the length of the exchanges and Nick’s ability to shorten them. The more Novak hits, the safer he is. In a game with so much at stake, so many emotions, it is difficult for those who start to make mistakes. Nick agreed to play too many rallies, play soft, wait for the right ball to attack, which generally makes sense, but I expected him to take more risks in a Grand Slam final against Novak Djokovic, create a lot more uncertainty. Kyrgios’ physical fitness is not at the optimal level because he doesn’t train as much as the others, he doesn’t follow the full circuit. It was important for him to agree not to go for long exchanges.”

Djokovic’s experience

“In the first set Novak looked at his rival, where he was serving, where he was going in the big points, how he played. Once he lost the first set, Djokovic was ready for the next thing. There were two games in one. Sure experience played a role, he never panicked. He started down in many games and knew how to stay calm. His refusal to lose is, if not the best in the world, one of them along with Rafa’s. The ability to turn games around, to find solutions. There was too much at stake to be so solid. His tactical knowledge was important in the final. He knew exactly what he had to do, and it took him a set to figure it out.”

Kyrgio’s mind

“I don’t think when Nick is expressive it’s a problem, I think the opposite. Each one is different. Against Stefanos (Tsitsipas) he made himself heard from the first point to the last. It’s his way of getting the energy and aggressiveness that he needs to play. When he’s quiet he doesn’t play aggressive or at his best. He is much more vulnerable when he is silent. He creates problems because he needs them to get the best of himself. Many people think that it is annoying. It’s good for him, it’s something he needs. Sometimes he makes big little problems until a new one comes along and he can move on to that second one.

When he played against Stefanos and thought he should have been disqualified, he talked about it throughout the match and played at his best. The next morning, in the locker room, Nick was still talking about it with another chair umpire. The problem against Djokovic was the loss of concentration. He broke him twice when he was leading 40-15 and 40-0. It’s much more worrying than when he gets mad at people, which makes him focus. He has a lot in common with John McEnroe. When he is calm is when he is lost”.

The French coach commented that Kyrgios still has a long way to go to win a Grand Slam title. Mouratoglou explains that you must be as well prepared as possible physically. Although he is on the way, he still has to improve.
