The capital of Alava will once again host the Vitoria-Gasteiz Women’s Pelota Masters for the second consecutive year. It is a tournament that will provide greater visibility to the pelotaris in a modality in which women make their way little by little. The championship will consist of two sessions, framed in two emblematic dates: July 25, the day of Santiago, and August 7, in full celebration of La Blanca. The festive hustle and bustle may well help to complete the thousand seats of the fronton of the Plaza de los Fueros, a space with a great aroma of pelota and which will serve as the setting for the tournament.

On the day of Santiago, the handball semifinals will be played at 11:30 am with the participation of eight pelota players who are beginning to win the top positions in the main calendar events in Euskadi. Amaia Aldai from Biscay and Andrea Capellán from Rioja will face Olatz Arrizabalaga and Itxaso Erasun from Alava in the first semifinal, while Miren Larrarte and Nora Mendizabal from Gipuzkoa will face Leire Garai from Alava and Enara Garmide from Biscay in the second semifinal.

In the afternoon, starting at 6:00 p.m., the shovel semifinals will begin, with representatives from Álava, such as Ane Ibáñez, champion of Spain, Haizea Salanueva, Aroa Torres or Irati Álava, young people with a lot of projection. On August 7 at 11:30 a.m., the winners of the series will play the finals. «With this new edition we seek not only to make women’s baseball much more visible, but also to make it a beautiful day and a show for the fan. We want to make it clear that Basque pelota is not only a sport, but that it is also part of our culture”, affirmed yesterday the Councilor for Youth and Coexistence, Miren Fernández de Landa, during the presentation of the tournament.

The competition, organized by the Basque Pelota Federation and the Vitoria City Council, will serve to take “one more step in equality and in the promotion of handball and shovel, which is growing steadily over time” , remarked Aitor Ruíz de Luzuriaga, base coordinator of the Alavesa Pelota Federation.

Tournament of the White Virgin

This second edition of the Women’s Pelota Masters will not be the only contest that the Vitorian public will be able to enjoy in the pelota. Fernández de Landa wanted to remember that on August 5 the Virgen Blanca Professional Baseball Championship will begin at the Ogueta fronton. It will start with the first semifinal between Laso-Imaz and Peña II-Albisu. Two days later, the same date as the finals of the women’s master, the second semifinal will take place, where Altuna III and Rezusta will face off against Ezkurdia and Zabaleta. The winners of both rounds will access the final phase, which will be played on August 9 at the Ogueta fronton. Tickets will cost 20 euros and can be reserved online on the tournament website.
