North Africa: JM / Judo – Bouamar and Belrakaa add two silver medals to Algeria

Oran — Algerian judokas Bouamar Mustapha and Yasser and Belrakaa Mohamed Sofiane (-100 kg and + 100 kg) settled for two silver medals on Friday in the finals of their respective categories of the judo tournament counting for the 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games (JM) which continue in Oran.

Bouamar, was beaten in the final by the Spaniard Sharazadishvili, after overcoming the pitfall of Kumric Marco (Croatia), and Kukilj Aleksandar (Serbia) respectively, in the quarter and semi-finals.

For his part, Belrakaa left feathers in the final against the Slovenian Dracic. Exempt in the first round, the Algerian judoka gained the upper hand during the following rounds over Chelaru Grigoras (Spain) and Andreev Guerman (France).

Apart from these two silver medals, the Algerian team came out of this third and final day of the judo tournament empty-handed. She was represented by five athletes, including Kaoutar Ouallal (-78 kg), who finished fifth after losing her bronze final against Turkey’s Yilmaz Nur,

The other two concerned by this last day of judo, Abderrahmane Benemadi (-90 kg) and Aslah Sonia (-78 kg) both left the events in the first rounds.

During the first two days, the Algerian judokas, nine in number, obtained a gold medal and another in bronze, the work of Driss Messaoud (-73 kg) and Amina Belkadi (-60 kg).

Invited to evaluate the participation of Algerian judo in these JM, the national technical director, Samir Sbaâ, was “satisfied” with the course of his athletes.

“I believe that the balance sheet is positive at the highest point. This is the result of a great work carried out over the past year, during which our judokas have benefited from several internships both in the country and abroad”, he declared at the outset to the APS.

He noted, moreover, that the Algerian judo managed, on the occasion of these JM of Oran, to win its first gold medal since the edition of Pescara (Italy) in 2009.

“During the two following editions in 2013 (Mersina, Turkey) and Tarragona (Spain), we settled for only two bronze medals in each of the two meetings”, he recalled.

Algeria participated with 14 athletes (7 ladies and 7 gentlemen) in this tournament in which some 157 judokas representing 23 countries took part.
