As a fan at the World Cup qualifying match between Sweden and Slovenia, Dirk Nowitzki targeted his former teammate and Mavs star Luka Doncic. As the Slovenian stood at the free-throw line, Nowitzki shouted “Overrated!” along with the Swedish fans.
The two national teams met on Sunday evening in Stockholm for the last group match of World Cup qualifying group C. Nowitzki, whose wife is from Sweden, was also there with the family.
Even before the game, Doncic and Nowitzki, who played together for the Mavs in Würzburg’s last NBA season 2018/19, welcomed each other warmly in the catacombs. During the game, however, the German showed no mercy.
As Doncic stood at the free-throw line during the first quarter, the Swedish fans chanted “Overrated!” (in German: overrated) to upset the 23-year-old. Nowitzki sat on the sidelines – and joined in the chanting.
But Doncic wasn’t too impressed, he sunk both free throws and had to laugh at the chanting of the fans and his buddy. In the end Slovenia narrowly prevailed with 84:81, also thanks to 31 points from Doncic. The reigning European champions will face Germany and Finland in the next qualifying group.
